By the time Marguerite was in the twelfth grade, the Pinesville School District had consolidated with Turner County. Marguerite recounted this experience of changing schools for her senior year as being “kind of odd because the people that you were going to school with in the small setting, now you’re at another school and you only see them during the class changes or either during lunch or riding the buses back to Pinesville” (Marguerite Manley).

A notable storyline in Marguerite’s literacy-in-person relates to using reading and writing to cultivate joy in her life. When she was in college, she was editor of the Kaleidoscope, a literary magazine published at her school in which she published short stories and poems. Like BeBe, Marguerite said that she has always enjoyed writing poems for personal reasons, to express herself and to make sense of life, stating: “Sometimes I’ll just write them down on a pad or something” (Marguerite Manley). In fact, for fifteen years Marguerite carried a poem with her in her purse that was about a failed relationship and served as a reminder of her self worth:

I did have one that I kept in my purse for quite a while, but I ended up throwing it away. It was before I met my husband—a relationship that I had with someone that I shouldn’t have had no business so to speak, and I wrote a poem. It was like after everything was in the wind, and I wrote a poem and I kept it for awhile. I took it out maybe 2 or 3 years ago. I’ve been married 18 years! [laughing] (Marguerite Manley).
